About University of New Orleans
The University of New Orleans, often referred to as UNO, is a medium-sized public urban university, having the main campus located on the New Orleans Lakefront within New Orleans, which is the largest city and metropolitan area in the US state of Louisiana. New Orleans is often called the ‘’most unique’’ city in America, being renowned for its French architecture, culture, cuisine and music, due to the fact that it is home to numerous jazz legends, such as Louis Armstrong.
UNO was officially established by Act 60 of the 1956 Louisiana Legislature, being originally called Louisiana State University in New Orleans, becoming known under its current name in February, 1974. The university is academically organized into 5 colleges which are: the College of Business Administration, the College of Education and Human Development, the College of Engineering, College of Liberal Arts and College of Science, through which it offers its approximately 12 000 students various educational programs in numerous fields of study.
The athletic teams from UNO are known as the New Orleans Privateers, who currently participate in the Sun Belt Conference, in various sports, including baseball, basketball, golf, tennis and volleyball. The Privateers play club football but they do not have a football team, due to the fact that the school does not sponsor a football team as an NCAA sport. The privateers are perhaps best known for their achievements in baseball and basketball, in which they’ve made most of their notable wins, including in 1974, when Ron Maestri led the baseball team to the Division II World Series. In basketball, between 1987 and 1996, the Privateers have qualified for four NCAA tournaments in 10 seasons, they won the Sun Belt conference in ‘78 and ‘96 and they have been highly ranked nationally, 4 times, in ’87, ’91, ’93 and ’96.
The list of notable UNO alumni contains resonant names such as Walter Boasso - former Louisiana state senator from St. Bernard Parish who made national headlines for fighting to combine levee boards in southeast Louisiana, Joel Chaisson - president of the Louisiana State Senate, attorney, James H. Clark - co-founder of Silicon Graphics, Inc., and Netscape Communications, Jeffrey D. Sadow - political scientist, columnist, professor at Louisiana State University in Shreveport, as well as several other people, who have made themselves notable, in various fields, after graduation.
